In St. James, start in Montego Bay. It is the parish's main transport hub, and it has the widest range of places to eat, from jerk stops and seafood by the water to a vegan kitchen and a Chinese restaurant.
For jerk, start with Scotchies Jerk Centre in the Coral Gardens area of Ironshore, which Visit Jamaica describes as a casual, open-air jerk stop where the meat is cooked over pimento wood. For Jamaican breakfast and traditional plates, try Pelican Grill on the Hip Strip. Pick the area that fits your day and work from there.
Montego Bay
Montego Bay has three food areas worth knowing: the Hip Strip on Gloucester Avenue, the waterfront near the marina, and downtown around the markets. For more places by kind of food, see the Montego Bay directory page.
Jerk cooked over pimento wood is the food Montego Bay is known for.
Hip Strip and Gloucester Avenue
Along Gloucester Avenue, The Pork Pit serves jerk pork and chicken, and Visit Jamaica names it, along with Scotchies, as a Montego Bay jerk destination.
Pelican Grill is also on the Hip Strip. It serves Jamaican breakfast and traditional Jamaican meals, with ackee, callaloo, fried dumplings and plantain among the dishes. For more on the morning plate, read our guide to Jamaican breakfast.
The Hip Strip has more restaurants than these two. Our Montego Bay restaurant guide covers the strip in more detail.
Waterfront and marina
HouseBoat Grill is a floating restaurant at the Montego Bay Marina and Fish Sanctuary, serving seafood and gourmet dining, with grilled octopus and Caribbean spiny lobster among its named dishes.
Pier 1 on the Waterfront, on Howard Cooke Boulevard, offers Jamaican and international waterfront dining. Sky Beach is a shore-side seafood venue.
Downtown and the markets
Downtown is the market side of Montego Bay. Charles Gordon Market on Fustic Road sells vegetables, ground provisions and dry goods, and the St. James Municipal Corporation says residents shop there for their weekly food. Stalls carry yams, bananas, plantains, melons, cucumbers, scallion, pumpkin, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, pineapples and other fruit.
The Bryon Leslie Complex on William Street has fruit and vegetable markets and a fish market. Juici Patties has locations at Sam Sharpe Square and Barnett Street, as well as Westgate and Fairview. Bakeries and other food businesses cluster around St. James Street, Barnett Street and Sam Sharpe Square.
Downtown vending changes with the day, with jerk-pan vendors and ground-provision sellers working the streets. If you find a roadside stall you like, treat it as that day's stop rather than a fixed address.

Food St. James is known for
St. James is particularly associated with Montego Bay jerk. Scotchies and The Pork Pit are the jerk stops named earlier, and Scotchies cooks over pimento wood. Jerk is not limited to chicken, because Scotchies serves pork, sausage and fish as well. For a wider look at jerk across the island, see where to get the best jerk chicken in Jamaica, parish by parish.
Ackee and saltfish, fried dumplings and plantain are Jamaican dishes found in Montego Bay.
Visit Jamaica names ackee and saltfish, callaloo, fried dumplings and plantain among the Jamaican dishes available in Montego Bay. Other staples to look for include rice and peas, curry goat, oxtail, escoveitch fish, festival and roasted breadfruit.
Seafood runs along the coast, from HouseBoat Grill and Sky Beach to Dev Seaside Restaurant and the fish market at the Bryon Leslie Complex.
The Montego Bay Jerk and Food Festival took place at Catherine Hall on Howard Cooke Boulevard on August 1, 2026, as the 17th staging. The 2026 ticket prices were J$4,000 (about US$25) for general presale, J$5,000 (about US$31) at the gate and J$6,500 (about US$41) for VIP presale. Harmony Beach Park hosts the Island Vibes Farmers and Food Market on the first Saturday of every month, from 8 am to 10 pm. Farmers, food vendors and Jamaican dishes are all part of it.
Practical tips before you go
Getting between towns. Montego Bay is the main transport hub. Licensed route taxis display their routes and are marked "TAXI." Fares are going up: the Jamaica Information Service reported in June 2026 that a 16 percent increase for public passenger vehicles would come in two phases, with the second starting July 1, 2026. Check the fare with the driver before you get in, and keep small bills for the trip.
Yams, bananas, plantains and scallion are typical market produce.
Cash and cards. Carry Jamaican dollars in small notes for route taxis, markets, roadside vendors and cookshops. Tourist-area restaurants, hotels and larger chains may take cards, but payment methods vary by business, so check before you order.
When food is available. Hours at Charles Gordon Market and at roadside food depend on the vendor and the day's supply. Downtown, soup, porridge and cooked food tend to sell in the early morning, at midday and in the afternoon, and some vendors do better in the evening. Hotel and resort restaurants may serve on Sundays, while independent restaurants and shopping-centre venues may close. Confirm before you go: Sunday hours are set by each business, so check the day you plan to visit.
Ordering at a cookshop or jerk stop. Greet the server, ask for the day's menu, say which meat, fish and sides you want, check the total, and then pay. If food is sold by weight or by piece, ask the price before the plate is prepared. Cookshop portions are put together from what is ready that day, so look before you choose.
Heat and wait. Pepper heat varies, so find out whether the sauce is hot before you add it, or request it on the side if you are unsure. A line may mean food is being cooked in batches. A jerk stop can take about 20 minutes to cook and cut your chicken, so plan for a short wait.
Prices and currency. In tourist areas, check whether a price is in JMD or USD before you pay. A resort menu may offer Jamaican dishes, but a downtown market or cookshop is more likely to reflect the day's produce and changing menus. For what a plate costs across the island, see our guide to food prices in Jamaica.
