What a box food is and how ordering works

Box food is a Jamaican takeaway lunch packed in a foam or cardboard container. The usual structure is a serving of rice, a meat or fish dish, gravy and one or more vegetables or starches.

A typical order works in five steps. First, choose the protein the cookshop has that day, such as fried chicken, jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry goat, oxtail, stew peas or fish. Second, choose rice and peas or white rice. Some places also offer ground provisions, festival, dumplings, plantain, cabbage, callaloo or macaroni and cheese. Third, add gravy, including gravy from another dish where the cookshop allows it. Fourth, choose a small, medium or large portion when those sizes are offered. Fifth, take the meal away in a box, or eat it at the cookshop if there is seating.

A box food is not one fixed recipe. The meat and sides depend on the day, the cookshop and the town. Mama Chu Chu lists rice, plantain, festival and fried dumpling as separate sides. Montego Bay Restaurant says its mains come with rice and peas or white rice, cabbage and plantains. Ocho Rios Jerk Centre changes its protein by day.

Why food prices have risen

STATIN, the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, reported 6.5% year-on-year inflation for all of Jamaica in August 2024. Food and non-alcoholic beverages were up 6.3% in the same report. The Jamaica Observer reported that food prices rose 8.1% year on year in December 2024, driven by fruits, vegetables and pulses.

A box-food price includes more than the meat. Ingredients, cooking fuel, wages, packaging, transport, utilities and rent all affect the final price, along with the business's margin. Oxtail, goat and fish generally cost more than chicken because the protein and its preparation cost more.

Ingredient prices in Kingston

A Consumer Affairs Commission grocery survey from 2 to 3 October 2024 recorded whole chicken at roughly J$825 to J$888 per kilogram in listed Kingston-area supermarkets. White rice ranged from roughly J$171 to J$207 per kilogram, and dried salted fish ranged from about J$1,256 to J$2,098 per kilogram. These are supermarket prices, so a cookshop's cost may be different.

Packaging costs in Montego Bay

In June 2024, the Jamaica Observer reported that Montego Bay vendors expected box-food prices to rise after the single-use plastic container ban. One vendor said plastic containers cost about J$3,500 for 400, while paper boxes cost about J$5,500 for 200.

Paying for a box food

Jamaica's official tourism site identifies the Jamaican dollar as the country's currency and says international cards are accepted by many ATMs. Small cookshops and roadside vendors can work differently from hotels and chains, so carry Jamaican-dollar cash.

Ask whether the cookshop takes cards before you order, because payment methods vary from one vendor to the next.

Choosing a safe vendor

The Jamaica Information Service's January 2024 guidance, Safe to Savour, says food handlers should hold valid food-handler permits. Food establishments should display the required licence and public-health certification. Look for those when you choose a cookshop.

Ordering the right size

Sizes are not standard across Jamaica. Some places use small and large, others use small, medium and large, and some list several prices without naming the sizes. Montego Bay Restaurant adds US$2 for large portions on several chicken and goat meals. Mama Chu Chu lists several price levels for curry goat, oxtail, fish and chicken without naming every tier. Ocho Rios Jerk Centre lists soup at J$350 small and J$600 large, but its daily meals are not split by size.

Two foam takeaway boxes side by side, one smaller and one larger, with the lids open Sizes are not standard, so compare the protein and the sides, not only the name of the size.

Ask two questions before you pay: how much meat comes with the small, and what sides come with the large.

Common questions

How much is a box food in Jamaica?

In Kingston, Mama Chu Chu lists curry chicken at J$1,000 (about US$6), curry goat at J$1,500 or J$2,500, and oxtail at J$2,500 or J$3,000 on its menu as of October 2026. On the Ocho Rios Jerk Centre menu, curry goat is J$1,990 (about US$13) from Friday to Sunday. Montego Bay Restaurant prices its meals in US dollars, with curry chicken at US$13 and oxtail at US$25.

What is in a box food?

A box food usually has one protein, such as chicken, curry goat, oxtail, fish, stew peas or another dish that the cookshop has that day. It comes with rice and peas or white rice, gravy and one or more sides, such as cabbage, vegetables, plantain, festival, dumpling, ground provisions or macaroni and cheese. Montego Bay Restaurant says its meals include cabbage and plantains.

What is the difference between a small and large box food?

A large portion usually has more protein, rice and sides, and it may be enough to share. A small portion is meant for one lighter meal. The sizes are not the same from one cookshop to the next, so compare the protein and the sides, not only the name of the size.

How much is a KFC box in Jamaica?

KFC Jamaica's official menu lists the Chicken Box at J$650 (about US$4) and the Chicken Box combo at J$730 (about US$5) as of October 2026. The Big Deal is J$1,490 (about US$9), and the Zinger Big Box is J$1,900 (about US$12). The Consumer Affairs Commission's October 2024 survey recorded whole chicken at roughly J$825 to J$888 per kilogram in Kingston-area supermarkets. Oxtail, goat and fish usually cost more than chicken because the protein is more expensive to buy and prepare.
