If your ship docks at Montego Freeport, you have two good options for a meal. You can eat in Freeport itself at House Boat Grill Restaurant, a floating seafood restaurant inside the Montego Bay Marine Park Fish Sanctuary. Or you can take a licensed taxi about 10 minutes away, in normal traffic, to the Hip Strip, where restaurants, bars, Doctor's Cave Beach and Margaritaville sit close together. The better choice depends on how long you have ashore, whether a beach is part of your plan, and how soon you need to be back at the ship.
Where the ship docks and what is close by
Cruise ships dock at the Montego Freeport cruise terminal in St. James Parish, roughly 3 miles (5 kilometres) west of downtown Montego Bay and the Hip Strip. The Hip Strip is officially called Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, and it was formerly Gloucester Avenue. It holds the largest concentration of visitor restaurants and beaches in the area, so most of your food choices after the port will be there.
A seafood lunch beside the water is the easiest meal to fit around a port call.
The House Boat Grill is the most convenient named restaurant for a meal in the Freeport area. It serves lunch from noon to 3 p.m. and dinner from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day, which covers a late lunch or an early dinner on a cruise day. It is a seafood restaurant, so if you came to Jamaica for fish, this is the easiest place to start.
Several other places sit within about 2.5 kilometres of the terminal. Blabba's Smoothie Sopt, on Mangrove Drive in Freeport, sits in the vegan, vegetarian and Ital category. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and it is closed on Sundays. Vegan and Ital labels describe the kind of menu, not every ingredient in every dish, so ask which items suit your diet.
Once you are in Montego Bay itself, St James Bakery is a practical stop for a quick bite. It sells bakery goods and patties, and it is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed on Sundays. New Golden Phoenix Restaurant on Lower Harbour Street serves Chinese and Asian food every day, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Mondays and until 9 p.m. the rest of the week. If you want something casual and fast, Suzie's Beach Grill is a fast food and takeout place open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Martina's Juice Bar and Grill is a bar and grill open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For breakfast or an early start, Regal Caterers at 15 Market Street is a café and caterer open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Hip Strip: food, beach and entertainment
Margaritaville Montego Bay is a restaurant, bar and entertainment venue. Its menu is Jamaican-inspired and includes burgers, seafood and drinks, and the venue also offers water activities. Doctor's Cave Beach is a short drive away, so you can make a day of it. The menu prices are in US dollars, so compare them in US dollars.
Burgers, fish tacos and Jamaican-inspired dishes make up a casual Hip Strip lunch.
The Jamaica Tourist Board also names The Pelican Grill on Gloucester Avenue, a Jamaican homestyle restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with Pier 1 for waterfront food, drinks and entertainment and Marguerite's for a more formal seaside meal.
For jerk on the Hip Strip, Pork Pit at 27 Gloucester Avenue is known for jerk chicken, jerk pork and jerk shrimp, served with festival and rice and peas. A September 2024 travel guide to Montego Bay gave its hours as 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and hours can change since then. For more on jerk across the island, read our guide to where to get jerk chicken in Montego Bay.
Juici Patties has a Montego Bay location on St. James Street. It is a practical stop for patties, with beef, chicken, lobster and vegetable options. A patty and a cold drink make a light lunch that you can eat before you head back to the port.
Doctor's Cave Beach is the established beach on the Hip Strip, and Jamaica's tourism guidance places it about a 10-minute drive from the port. As of October 2026, admission is US$8 for adults aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12. It is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with changing facilities, showers and food service on site.
Choosing between Freeport and the Hip Strip
Freeport is the better fit if you want a meal close to the ship and do not want to spend much of your day in traffic. The House Boat Grill gives you a sit-down seafood lunch or dinner, and a handful of other options sit within a few kilometres. The trip back is short, which matters when your all-aboard time is fixed.
The Hip Strip suits a day that mixes a meal with time on the beach.
The Hip Strip is the better fit if food is only one part of your day. You can combine a meal with time on Doctor's Cave Beach, a stop at the shops or an evening of music. The trade-off is the taxi ride in both directions, so you need a clear plan for the return.
If your group is split, with some people wanting a beach and others wanting a sit-down lunch, you can drop the beach visitors on the Hip Strip and return the lunch group to Freeport. Agree the pickup time with the driver before you separate.
Getting from the terminal by licensed taxi
Use licensed transport from the cruise terminal. Jamaica's tourism board describes two kinds of taxi. Route taxis run fixed routes, carry several passengers and charge regulated fares. Chartered or private taxis are hired for one group, and the fare is normally agreed at booking. For more on the ride, see taxis and transport from the Montego Bay cruise terminal.
The road between Freeport and the Hip Strip can slow during cruise ship arrivals and departures.
A licensed route taxi carries red PPV plates or white P plates, and it has a black-and-white check pattern, the route printed on the front doors and the words "Route Taxi" on the doors. The Transport Authority also expects a taxi globe on top and a driver who carries a Transport Authority identification card and a driver badge. If the car you are looking at does not match that description, wait for another one.
The Jamaica Information Service reported that Cabinet approved a 16% increase in public-passenger fares in June 2026, so agree the amount before you get in, even if an older price is in your head. For a private taxi, agree the full price, the currency, the number of passengers and whether the trip is one way or return before you climb in. The tourism board advises carrying cash for taxis and confirming the fare first.
Your all-aboard time is fixed, and the ship will not wait for a late taxi. Ask the driver for a pickup time before you leave the port, and leave a wide margin. The road between Freeport and the Hip Strip can slow during cruise ship arrivals and departures. Once you reach the terminal, you still need time for security and boarding.
Money, cards and what to bring
The Jamaican dollar is the official currency. At about J$159 to US$1, using the Bank of Jamaica rate of October 13, 2026, you can compare a Jamaican price with a US dollar price quickly. Credit and debit cards are common at established restaurants, but you should carry smaller notes for taxis, tips, beach admission and small food stops. Jamaican ATMs generally accept Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Plus cards.
Before you order, check whether a service charge, tax or card surcharge is added to the bill. Tipping norms are covered in our guide to tipping and eating out in Jamaica.
Confirm before you go: ask The House Boat Grill for the current menu and total charges before you order, since its menu prices are in US dollars.
For places in other parishes, use the parish pages in the restaurant directory.
Common questions
Most cruise-day food questions come down to the distance from the ship and the time you have left.
Where does the cruise ship dock in Montego Bay?
Ships dock at the Montego Freeport cruise terminal in St. James Parish, about 3 miles (5 kilometres) west of downtown Montego Bay and the Hip Strip. The port is a gateway, not the main visitor area. To reach the restaurants and beaches, you will need a licensed taxi, a cruise shuttle or an organized excursion.
What restaurants are near the Montego Bay cruise port?
The closest choices are in Freeport. The House Boat Grill is a seafood restaurant open daily from noon to 11 p.m., and Blabba's Smoothie Sopt is a vegan, vegetarian and Ital spot open Monday to Saturday. On the Hip Strip, about 10 minutes away by car, Pork Pit serves jerk chicken, jerk pork and jerk shrimp, and Margaritaville Montego Bay offers burgers, seafood and Jamaican-inspired dishes with prices in US dollars.
Can you walk to the beach from Montego Bay cruise port?
Not as a cruise-day plan. The terminal and the Hip Strip are about 3 miles apart, and Jamaica's tourism guidance puts Doctor's Cave Beach about a 10-minute drive from the port. Take a licensed taxi, a cruise shuttle or an organized excursion. Once you reach the Hip Strip, the beach, Margaritaville and several restaurants are close enough to combine on foot.
What is the closest beach to the Montego Bay cruise port?
For a passenger who wants an established beach with facilities, Doctor's Cave Beach on the Hip Strip is the clearest choice. Tourism guidance places it about 10 minutes by car from the port. As of October 2026, admission is US$8 for adults aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, and it is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dead End Beach is another beach in the wider Hip Strip and airport area, but Doctor's Cave is the more structured option for a short port visit.
Is there anything to do at Montego Bay cruise port?
The port is mainly a gateway, but you can shop in the terminal and in the nearby craft-market areas. From there, a short taxi or shuttle ride takes you to the Hip Strip for food, Doctor's Cave Beach, shops and entertainment. Margaritaville also offers music and water activities. Organized excursions cover the golf courses, Rose Hall and other Montego Bay attractions, and a meal at the House Boat Grill is the simplest way to eat in Freeport.
