For seafood and cliffside dinners, Negril is the pick. For the widest mix of restaurants, from Hip Strip jerk stands to fine dining, Montego Bay is the stronger base. For Jamaican classics and jerk close to the north-coast attractions, Ocho Rios fits best.

Each of these is a pattern for the whole town, not a promise about every restaurant. Hours, menus and openings change, so treat the names below as places to start, and check each one before you go.

What each town is known for

Negril is known for seafood, cliffside dining and sunset meals. Visit Jamaica describes Rockhouse Restaurant as a fine-dining restaurant on Negril's cliffs. Rockhouse's own dining page lists the cliffside Rockhouse Restaurant, Pushcart Jerk Center for traditional Jamaican fare, and poolside dining, and it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. In June 2025, the Jamaica Observer described Blue Mahoe at Ocean Cliff Hotel as a cliffside restaurant serving seafood linguini, jerk chicken Alfredo and other Caribbean-influenced dishes. Rick's Café is known for cliff diving, sunsets and live performances, and it has dining too.

Montego Bay combines the Hip Strip, seafood, jerk food, nightlife and higher-end dining. The Hip Strip mixes restaurants, jerk stands, bars, live entertainment and nearby beaches, so an evening there can move from a jerk stand to a bar along one walkable stretch. Visit Jamaica names Pier One, Scotchie's and the Pork Pit as food and nightlife stops in the city. The Jamaica Observer has described Pelican Grill as a long-running landmark on the Hip Strip. Marguerites by the Sea is a Hip Strip restaurant that hosts food-and-wine dinners, and the Observer reported on one of them in 2023. For fine dining, Visit Jamaica places Sugar Mill Restaurant at Half Moon in the city's fine-dining category.

Ocho Rios is strongest for jerk, Jamaican home-style food and seafood near the attractions. Visit Jamaica lists Miss T's Kitchen for jerk chicken, curry goat and seafood, Scotchie's in Drax Hall for jerk food, and the Ocho Rios Jerk Centre for jerk chicken, pork, fish, conch and jerk sausage. Its seafood picks include Sharkies, Reggae Kitchen and Seaside Dutchie. Plantation Smokehouse, Spring Gardens and Mongoose cover local and international options.

If your day takes you to Dunn's River Falls, the Jamaica Observer reported in April 2024 that the park's existing restaurants were Haydens and Too Cool, serving jerk chicken, pork, fish, curried goat, snacks and drinks. The same report said a larger jerk centre and restaurant was planned, so check what is open on the day you visit.

How the three towns compare on food

Montego Bay has the broadest mix of casual, nightlife, international and fine-dining choices of the three. Ocho Rios has a particularly strong concentration of Jamaican food, especially jerk, curry goat, oxtail and seafood, and Visit Jamaica also lists international and fusion choices there, including Italian, Indian, Chinese and Irish food. Negril is the strongest of the three for seafood, sunset and cliffside dining. Visit Jamaica places Rockhouse on the cliffs and describes its contemporary Caribbean fine dining, and Rockhouse's dining page also lists Pushcart Jerk Center for traditional Jamaican fare. That gives a clear takeaway. Montego Bay leads on variety, Ocho Rios on Jamaican classics and jerk near the attractions, and Negril on seafood and scenery.

Prices are the hardest part to compare. Ask for the current menu before you budget, and ask whether a service charge is already on the bill. A tip is not the same as a service charge, so do not treat one as the other.

Area, parish and how to get there

Negril is associated with Westmoreland and Hanover. Its main food corridor is the Seven Mile Beach resort strip, where restaurants, beach bars and casual food sit along the main road. Walking is practical if you are staying on that strip. West End is a separate area, and the cliffside restaurants there are better reached by taxi.

A quiet white-sand beach with palm trees and turquoise water at midday Negril's food corridor runs along its long beachfront.

Montego Bay is in St. James. The easiest corridor for resort visitors is Gloucester Avenue, commonly called the Hip Strip. Tourism Montego Bay describes a walkable stretch near Doctor's Cave Beach, with hotels, jerk stands, bars and taxi ranks. Outside that corridor, use a licensed route taxi, a hotel-arranged taxi or a private driver. Sangster International Airport makes Montego Bay the more convenient arrival point for many visitors.

Ocho Rios is in St. Ann. Central Ocho Rios is suited to walking between town restaurants, the waterfront and nearby visitor facilities. Visit Jamaica recommends walking through town for visitors staying outside an all-inclusive resort, and it names the Ocho Rios boardwalk and central food stops. Dunn's River Falls and Drax Hall are outside the central restaurant area, so reach them by taxi, tour transfer or private driver. Visit Jamaica's family itinerary places central Ocho Rios food stops close to the Dunn's River activities, but an attraction restaurant and a town restaurant are not interchangeable. Scotchie's in Drax Hall sits outside the central area, so plan it as a taxi ride rather than a walk.

Use licensed taxis. Jamaica Tourist Board guidance says route taxis have checkered markings, "TAXI" identification and Transport Authority driver identification. Agree the fare before you leave, because private taxi fares are set when you book. Treat route taxis as a cash payment unless the driver says otherwise. For longer trips, Knutsford Express serves Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril.

Hours and payment

Rockhouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visit Jamaica lists Scotchie's Ocho Rios as open from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Before you go, confirm the hours with each restaurant, since they can change.

Ask about payment before you order. Cash, cards and service charges vary by restaurant, and no single rule covers all three towns. A quick question at the table, or a call ahead, saves a surprise when the bill arrives.

Choose the base by the eating you want

Choose Montego Bay for breadth and convenience, from the Hip Strip to fine dining at Half Moon. Choose Negril for seafood, beach meals and dinner on the cliffs, and plan taxi trips for West End. Choose Ocho Rios for jerk, Jamaican classics and food stops on the way to waterfalls and excursions. Visit Jamaica describes Ocho Rios restaurants as offering Jamaican food, seafood, international cuisine and fusion dining, so the choice is wider than jerk alone. The reasons are practical: where you can walk, what the evening looks like, and how far the attraction is from where you stay.

Jerk chicken pieces smoking over pimento wood on a charcoal drum grill Jerk is a draw in all three towns, and a focus in Ocho Rios.

Visit Jamaica also names Boston as a major jerk destination, and Faith's Pen as a roadside food stop between Kingston and Ocho Rios. Visit Jamaica also points to roadside stalls across the island for jerk, fried fish, fruit and fresh juice. Common questions

The answers below cover the questions visitors ask most often about choosing a food base in these three towns.

Which is better, Montego Bay or Negril?

It depends on the holiday. Montego Bay is better for restaurant variety, nightlife, a walkable dining corridor and both casual and fine dining. Negril is better for seafood, beach meals, sunsets and cliffside dining, with Rockhouse and Blue Mahoe as the clearest examples.

Is Ocho Rios nicer than Montego Bay?

Nicer depends on what you want from the trip. Ocho Rios suits visitors who want waterfalls, excursions, central Jamaican food and a smaller base built around attractions. Montego Bay suits visitors who want a larger dining corridor, nightlife, airport convenience and more restaurant choice.

Is Negril safer than Montego Bay?

The answer depends on the area you stay in, your accommodation, how you travel and the time of day. The US State Department advisory for Jamaica covers the island as a whole and does not rank one resort town against another. It says armed robberies and sexual assaults are common, particularly in Kingston and Montego Bay, so stay in established visitor areas, use licensed or hotel-arranged taxis, and avoid isolated areas after dark.

What is Ocho Rios famous for?

Ocho Rios is known for Dunn's River Falls, its north-coast adventure attractions, cruise and resort tourism, and its food. For eating, the town is known for jerk food, Jamaican home-style cooking and seafood. Visit Jamaica points to Miss T's Kitchen, Scotchie's in Drax Hall and the Ocho Rios Jerk Centre for jerk.

Where is the best food in Jamaica for tourists?

There is no single best town for every visitor. For these three towns, Montego Bay is the strongest all-round base for variety, Negril is the strongest for seafood and scenic dining, and Ocho Rios is the strongest for Jamaican classics, jerk and food stops near the attractions. Jamaica's best-known food experiences are not limited to resort towns. Visit Jamaica names Boston, a major jerk destination, and Faith's Pen, a roadside food stop between Kingston and Ocho Rios, as examples from the wider island.
