The most useful food stops on Jamaica's main routes are the towns along the A1 coastal road, plus two stops you plan on purpose: the Unity Valley rest area on the North-South Highway and Faith's Pen on the old Mount Rosser road. Falmouth and Discovery Bay stand out as planned meal stops between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Middle Quarters is the south-coast stop for pepper shrimp. Work out which side of the road you will be on, then choose the stop that fits your timing.
Planned stops, roadside vendors and formal rest areas
Three kinds of stop matter on a road trip, and they work differently. Planned restaurant stops have seating, a restroom and a predictable menu, but they need a detour and some time. Roadside vendors are quick, and the small ones may take only cash. Formal rest areas, such as Unity Valley, have set facilities on the toll road. Destinations such as Boston Bay require leaving the main route entirely.
Montego Bay to Negril on the A1
The A1 between Montego Bay and Negril runs through Hopewell, Lucea and Green Island, the main towns on the way. A 2024 Jamaica Observer report called Hopewell a bottleneck linking Montego Bay, Lucea and Negril, so traffic there can cost you time. Choose a visible cookshop or restaurant at Hopewell, and confirm parking and opening time before you stop.
The A1 has towns and roadside businesses rather than a chain of formal rest stops.
Lucea is a practical stop, with town markets, local food businesses and waterfront options. The town is congested, so allow extra time to park and pass through. Green Island is a roadside stop with small food businesses and vendors along the A1. Use the vendors there only after you have seen that the stall is open. Hanover is the parish for this stretch, so start with restaurants in Hanover.
Negril has planned restaurant options. In July 2024, a travel report put a jerk chicken meal with rice and peas at Best in the West on Norman Manley Boulevard at US$15, and the restaurant's hours then ran from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. That is a restaurant price, not a roadside one. For more on Negril's late and budget options, see our guide to where to eat in Negril on a budget.
Montego Bay to Ocho Rios
Falmouth is a practical planned stop on this route. The Jamaica Gleaner reported that the Falmouth Artisan Village opened at Hampden Wharf in March 2024, bringing public visitor facilities, food and entertainment to the town. Allow time for parking and town traffic. The town is in Trelawny, and it is also close to the Falmouth cruise port, which makes it a good stop for a day ashore.
Falmouth is a practical planned stop, close to the cruise port.
Duncans and Rio Bueno are route communities between Falmouth and the east. The North Coast Highway bypasses Rio Bueno, as the Jamaica Observer described in 2022, so you may not drive through the town itself. Pick a specific open business before you set out, rather than assuming every roadside stop is trading all day.
Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay both sit in St. Ann. In Discovery Bay, Lonely Planet describes the Ultimate Jerk Centre as a popular north-coast rest stop, and the Jamaica Observer has described the stretch between Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay as having several jerk-food restaurants. Farenough Jerk & Seafood opened on Main Street in Runaway Bay in 2025.
Kingston to Ocho Rios: the toll road or the old road
You have two real choices. The North-South Highway keeps you on the toll road, and the Unity Valley rest area is the formal break on that route. Faith's Pen requires leaving the highway for the older Mount Rosser road, and it is the established roadside food stop on that road. A 2022 Jamaica Star report confirmed that vendors were still operating at Faith's Pen, although fewer stalls were busy than at its peak. Expect basic facilities and varying menus between stalls. For the driving side, see driving in Jamaica as a visitor.
The North-South Highway is a controlled-access road, so formal stops are few.
Moneague sits near the Unity Valley area, but it is best treated as an access point rather than a food stop in its own right. If you need a meal in Ocho Rios itself, the town has a much wider restaurant choice, and that makes it a destination rather than a midpoint break. Our guide to Faith's Pen, the roadside food stop between Kingston and Ocho Rios explains that stop in more detail.
The south coast and pepper shrimp
Middle Quarters is known for spicy pepper shrimp sold by roadside vendors. A 2022 Condé Nast Traveler guide describes it as a drive-up peppered-shrimp stop north of Black River, and the vendors sell the shrimp in bags for you to eat there or carry onward. Black River has more planned options, and the same guide names Tastee Restaurant and Las Vegas Cafe there. Treasure Beach has visitor-oriented restaurants, and it works best as a planned stop once you know its hours for the day. Both towns sit in St. Elizabeth, and our guide to Middle Quarters pepper shrimp covers the stop itself.

Little Ochie Seafood Restaurant in Alligator Pond is a named seafood stop. In July 2024, the Jamaica Observer reported that the restaurant was still operating after Hurricane Beryl, although parts of its seating area were damaged.
Confirm before you go: check the outdoor seating and the south-coast road access before you plan a fixed-time stop at Little Ochie.
Kingston to Port Antonio: Boston Bay
Boston Bay, or Boston Beach, is a destination stop rather than a quick highway service area. A 2022 Jamaica Observer report described the Boston Jerk Celebrations at the Boston Beach jerk centre, and the Observer has described Boston as the home of jerk in Portland. Plan a longer stop for it, and read our guide to Boston Bay jerk and Portland's jerk centres before you go. For the price of jerk chicken itself, see our guide to jerk chicken prices in Jamaica.
Highway rest areas and toll payments
The North-South Highway is a controlled-access road. Its operator, Jamaica North South Highway Company Limited, runs toll plazas at Caymanas, Angels, Linstead, Unity Valley, Lydford and Mammee Bay. The concessionaire rest-stop area at Unity Valley can be entered free through the Unity Valley Toll Plaza, and it has food stations, restrooms and other traveller services. The operator also advertises 24/7 patrol services for breakdowns, emergencies and road hazards.
Payment is easier than it used to be, but it is not universal. As of August 2025, North-South toll plazas accepted cash and Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards. As of February 2024, the East-West Highway 2000 toll plazas, at Spanish Town, Vineyards, May Pen and Portmore, accepted credit and debit cards. Carry Jamaican cash anyway, because roadside vendors and small cookshops may not take cards. For the toll rates themselves, see Highway 2000 and North-South Highway tolls.
A toll plaza is not automatically a food stop. Plan your food and restroom breaks around the Unity Valley service area or the towns you reach after you leave the toll road.
What roadside food costs
The clearest recent price on this route is a restaurant price. A jerk chicken meal with rice and peas at Best in the West in Negril was US$15 in July 2024. Treat that as a restaurant meal, not a universal roadside rate.
For pepper shrimp, roast corn, roast yam and saltfish, fish tea and seasonal fruit, the price depends on the vendor, the portion and the season. Ask the vendor for the price and the serving size before you accept the bag or the plate. Visit Jamaica names Melrose Hill as a popular roadside stop for roast yam, roast sweet potato and saltfish, and Middle Quarters for pepper shrimp.
Ask for the price, serving size and currency before you order. For meal costs across the island, see what food costs in Jamaica.

Common questions
Where to stop for food between Montego Bay and Negril?
Hopewell, Lucea and Green Island are the main towns on the A1. Hopewell can be slow because of traffic, so choose a visible cookshop or restaurant there. For a planned meal, Best in the West in Negril is a documented jerk restaurant on Norman Manley Boulevard, and it was open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in July 2024.
Where to stop for food between Kingston and Ocho Rios?
If you stay on the North-South Highway, use the Unity Valley rest area, which the operator says has food stations and restrooms. If you take the old Mount Rosser road, stop at Faith's Pen, where vendors were still operating in 2022. Moneague is the access point to the old road.
Where to eat between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios?
Falmouth is a practical planned stop, with the Falmouth Artisan Village at Hampden Wharf. Discovery Bay has the Ultimate Jerk Centre, and Runaway Bay has Farenough Jerk & Seafood, which opened in 2025. For a full restaurant meal, Ocho Rios is the largest choice, though it is a destination rather than a midpoint break.
What are popular roadside foods in Jamaica?
Jerk chicken and jerk pork with rice and peas are the most common, along with roast corn, roast yam and saltfish, and pepper shrimp from Middle Quarters. Cookshops also serve fish tea, mannish water and other soups, often earlier in the day. Seasonal fruit such as mangoes, guineps and pineapples sells at many stops.
Are there rest stops on Jamaica's highways?
Yes, but they are few. The North-South Highway has a formal rest area at Unity Valley, which the operator says offers food stations, restrooms and traveller services, and it is free to enter through the Unity Valley Toll Plaza. The East-West Highway 2000 has toll plazas and operator services, but a plaza is not automatically a place to eat.
