Jamaican stew peas is a thick stew of red kidney beans, locally called red peas, cooked in coconut milk with salted pigtail, salted beef, fresh beef or other meat. Flour dumplings called spinners cook in the same pot, and white rice is the usual partner. In Kingston, Mama Chu Chu Restaurant on Molynes Road, Sonia's Homestyle on Central Avenue and Lorna's Jamaican Cooking all serve it. Stew peas is usually a scheduled special rather than a dish on the menu every day, so check the day's menu before you travel.

"Peas" in this dish means kidney beans, not the green garden peas you may know from a frozen bag. The beans cook down with coconut milk, herbs and aromatics until the pot becomes a dense, rich gravy. Visit Jamaica counts stew peas among the country's iconic meals, and the Gleaner has described it as a weekly staple in Jamaican homes, with each cook keeping a version of their own, such as salted beef in place of pork. Thyme, scallion, garlic, pimento and Scotch bonnet pepper usually go into the pot. One pot can feed several people, which is a big part of why the dish is treated as family food, and it works well with white rice. Households also vary the beans, vegetables and dumplings, so no two pots are exactly alike.

What meat goes in stew peas

Pigtail and beef are the most familiar choices. Menus also show fresh beef, chicken foot, chicken, salted pork and combinations such as pigtail with beef. Salted meat is salty, so cooks usually boil or soak pigtail and salt beef before it goes into the stew.

Mama Chu Chu's rotating menu includes a special stew peas without pigtail, priced the same as its regular plate. That does not automatically mean the plate is meat-free. Ask what replaces the pigtail, and whether the stock was made with meat.

Vegetarian and Ital stew peas

A meatless version is a documented part of Jamaican cooking. It keeps the red peas, the coconut milk and the thick, seasoned format, and it leaves out the pigtail and beef. Some cooks use lentils, gungo peas (also called pigeon peas), other beans or vegetables instead.

National Geographic has written about Rastafari food principles, and Ital cooking is linked to them. Those principles usually avoid meat, processed ingredients and added salt, although practice varies from cook to cook. Ital is a broader idea than vegetarian, centred on natural, minimally processed food, and some Ital cooks use little or no added salt. A meatless pot may hold red kidney beans, coconut milk, onion, garlic, scallion, thyme, Scotch bonnet, potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, other ground provisions and vegetable spinners, and the exact mix changes from cook to cook.

Lorna's Jamaican Cooking serves veggie stew peas on its Monday menu at J$1,500 (about US$9) as of October 2026. Before you order a meatless plate, ask these three questions.

Which day to go

There is no single nationwide day for stew peas. Each kitchen runs its own weekly rotation, and the days differ from one menu to the next. Lorna's serves veggie stew peas on Monday and pigtail stew peas on Tuesday. Mama Chu Chu's rotating menu includes stew peas on Wednesday. Stew peas or red peas soup

These two dishes are easy to mix up, and the names overlap in everyday talk. Both use red peas, coconut milk, salted meat, vegetables and dumplings. Stew peas is thicker and is normally a main dish served with white rice. Red peas soup is more liquid and comes as a bowl, usually with ground provisions such as yam, coco, pumpkin, Irish potato, sweet potato or carrot.

Rice and peas is a different dish again. Rice and red peas are cooked together with coconut milk and seasoning, and it is a common Sunday dinner side. Some restaurants serve stew peas with rice and peas, so ask which you are getting.

Confirm before you go: menus rotate, so call the kitchen or check its menu on the day you plan to eat, especially if you need a specific meat or a meatless plate.
