Jamaica's spiny lobster closed season runs from April 1 through June 30, 2026, and during those weeks no one may fish for or harvest spiny lobster. Lobster that was legally caught and properly declared before the closed season can still be sold and eaten, so a restaurant may serve lobster in those months if its stock is declared. The open season runs from July 1 through March 31.

The closed season rules

The Fisheries (Spiny Lobster) Regulations, 2026 were gazetted on March 23, 2026, and they replaced the 2009 regulations. The National Fisheries Authority says lobster harvesting remains strictly prohibited during the closed season, even though legally harvested and declared stock may be sold or consumed. Declared stock has to meet new requirements for declaration, notification, storage, export and transaction records.

Restaurants, hotels, authorised storage facilities and commercial cold stores must keep lobster transaction records for at least three years. That makes the rules as much about restaurants as about fishers, because a kitchen has to be able to account for every lobster it buys and sells. Unreported or undeclared lobster found during the closed season may be seized.

Older Ministry of Agriculture notices mention a 21-day window for selling declared stock. The 2026 regulations replaced that framework with a continuing declaration and traceability system, as the Jamaica Information Service reported, so the older window no longer applies.

Two rules hold all year. Berried lobster, which carries eggs, and undersized lobster are prohibited at any time. The National Fisheries Authority sets the minimum carapace length at 7.62 centimetres, and the 2026 regulations also set minimum tail and telson measurements for males and females. Offenders may face fines of up to J$3 million (about US$18,900) or imprisonment for up to two years.

What the lobster is

Jamaican lobster is the Caribbean spiny lobster, generally identified as Panulirus argus, as NOAA Fisheries describes it. It has a hard, spiny body, long antennae and no large front claws. Its edible meat sits mainly in the tail, so it is usually served as a tail or as a split whole lobster.

Whole spiny lobsters with long antennae and no claws lying on crushed ice Caribbean spiny lobster has long antennae and no large front claws.

Maine or American lobster is a clawed lobster. Its large claws add claw and knuckle meat to the tail, which gives it a fuller range of cuts. Caribbean spiny lobster is valued mainly for its tail.

Jamaican kitchens cook it several ways. You will see grilled lobster, garlic-butter lobster, curried lobster, steamed or poached lobster and, in some seafood restaurants, fried or peppered lobster. The Cliff in Negril serves poached or grilled lobster with clarified or garlic-herb butter, steamed vegetables and coconut rice.

Queen conch runs on its own calendar

Queen conch is managed separately from lobster, so do not assume the lobster dates apply to it. The 2026 conch harvesting season began on March 1. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Jamaica Information Service describe an annual conch closed season that has run from August 30 through February 28, although the exact dates can be changed through regulations and Gazette notices. A JIS report from April 2026 says the existing conch close season regulations have not changed. For the dishes and where to eat it, see conch in Jamaica: the season, the dishes and where to eat it.

During the conch closed season, possession, sale, processing or trade in conch products is prohibited.

Where to eat lobster

Negril's West End

Negril's West End sits on the western side of Westmoreland. Pirates Dock Bar & Grill in Mary's Bay, on West End Road, serves grilled Caribbean lobster with garlic butter, priced at US$45 on its menu in 2026. It is open daily from 2 pm to 11 pm.

The Cliff Restaurant on West End Road serves breakfast from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, lunch from 11:30 am to 4 pm and dinner from 6 pm to 10 pm, with last seating at 9 pm. Its lobster comes poached or grilled, with vegetables and coconut rice.

Miss Penny's at Lighthouse Inn 2, also on West End Road, serves fresh lobster and seafood. It opens from 3 pm to 10 pm and is closed on Mondays. Its prices are in US dollars, 15% GCT is added, and Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted.

Alfred's Ocean Palace on Norman Manley Boulevard has Caribbean lobster salad and Caribbean lobster Jamaican curry on its menu. For more Negril seafood, read seafood restaurants in Negril.

Treasure Beach

Treasure Beach in St. Elizabeth is known for beach seafood, and lobster is part of that. Lobster Pot sits at Great Bay.

Lashings lists lobster as an optional pizza topping. It delivers in the Treasure Beach area, and it offers collection from its Treetop Restaurant in Sandy Bank. Delivery and collection run daily from noon to 8 pm, and customers pay by telephone once the order is agreed.

Hellshire, near Portmore

Hellshire Beach in St. Catherine is a well-known local seafood area with several shoreline restaurants, including Screechie's, Aunt Merl, Mel's One Stop and Prendy's. The Jamaica Observer reported in July 2024 that Hellshire was open for business after hurricane damage, and that lobster was among the seafood commonly sold there. In February 2026 the Jamaica Star reported that Hellshire operators were defending their seafood prices.

Hellshire is a cluster of independent seafood operators rather than one restaurant, so prices, hours and payment methods can vary from stall to stall. For the full guide to the beach, read Hellshire Beach fried fish.

Port Royal and Kingston

Y-Knot Bar & Grill in Port Royal, in Kingston parish, lists lobster at J$3,800 (about US$24) as of October 2026, with grilled, garlic or curry preparation, served with bammy or festival. Its salt-and-pepper lobster is J$2,500 (about US$16).

Gloria's Seafood City at Victoria Pier in Kingston lists honey jerk lobster at J$4,150 (about US$26) and lobster salad at J$3,100 (about US$19) as of October 2026. Battered lobster comes as part of a J$3,000 Buccaneer's Mix (about US$19).

For more seafood in Kingston, see seafood restaurants in Kingston. On the north coast, Sharkies Seafood and CrisNic Lobster Deck both put lobster on the menu; see where to eat in Runaway Bay.

What lobster costs

There is no single island-wide price for lobster. Restaurants may charge by the pound, by the whole lobster, by the tail or by the prepared dish. The prices above are dish prices, not per-pound figures, so they cannot be compared directly. Pirates Dock's US$45 is for the dish, not a per-pound figure. Miss Penny's publishes its prices in US dollars and points readers to its menu for item-level pricing, so the menu is the place to check the figure for the dish you want.

Halved grilled lobster tail with garlic butter and a lime wedge on a plate Menus price lobster by the dish, the tail or the whole lobster.

Ask whether the quoted amount is per pound, per tail, per whole lobster or for a full meal before you order, so you know what the figure covers.

Getting there, paying and timing

Hellshire sits near Portmore, and getting around the coast takes some planning. Arrange transport with a licensed taxi or driver, and agree the fare before you leave.

Bring Jamaican dollars for the menus that show prices in Jamaican dollars, such as Y-Knot. Bring US dollars for the Negril menus that show prices in US dollars, such as Miss Penny's. Carry some cash for the beach stalls, where payment methods vary.

Confirm before you go that the restaurant has lobster that day, and that its stock is declared if your trip falls between April 1 and June 30.

Common questions

When is lobster season in Jamaica?

Jamaica's spiny lobster open season runs from July 1 through March 31. The closed season runs from April 1 through June 30 each year, and the 2026 regulations keep those dates. Declared lobster that was legally caught before the closed season can still be sold, processed or eaten during the closed period.

When is lobster season closed in Jamaica?

The spiny lobster closed season is April 1 through June 30. During those dates nobody may legally harvest or fish for spiny lobster. Berried and undersized lobster is prohibited all year.

How much is a pound of lobster in Jamaica?

There is no single island-wide price, and menus price lobster by the dish, the tail or the whole animal. Menus as of October 2026 show Y-Knot at J$3,800 (about US$24) and Pirates Dock at US$45, but neither states a per-pound figure. To compare prices, ask what basis the quote uses before you order.

Why don't Caribbean lobsters have claws?

Caribbean spiny lobsters belong to a different group from American or Maine lobsters. They have spines and long antennae in place of the large front claws, so their meat sits mainly in the tail. Maine lobster offers tail, claw and knuckle meat, while the Caribbean spiny lobster is usually served as a tail or a split whole lobster.

Is Caribbean lobster better than Maine lobster?

Neither is objectively better, because they are different products. Caribbean spiny lobster has mild, sweet, firm tail meat and works well grilled, poached, curried or with garlic butter. Maine lobster suits diners who want claw meat, a softer texture or a fuller range of cuts.
