A Jamaican patty is a baked, folded pastry with a seasoned filling, and beef is the classic one. Three national chains sell them across the island: Juici Patties, Tastee Patties and Mother's. Tastee's standard beef patty went up to J$320 (about US$2.01) effective May 4, 2026, from J$300, according to Nationwide News. The yellow crust usually comes from turmeric, curry powder or annatto in the dough, not from the filling.
The three chains and where they started
Three national chains sit at the centre of the patty trade, and each one has its own history.
- Juici Patties. Juici began in 1978, when Jukie Chin sold patties from a shop beside his family home. Its first formal store opened in May Pen, Clarendon, in 1980. The company's history reports more than 60 Jamaican stores and over 1,400 employees. Manufacturing is centralized at Clarendon Park, and the company exports to 10 Caribbean islands. Juici also says it makes patties in Canada and the United Kingdom.
- Tastee Patties. Vincent Chang and Valerie Doreen Lue Shing founded Tastee in 1966 at Union Square in Kingston. The company moved to Cross Roads in 1968 and grew beyond Kingston during the 1980s. Its current website says it has more than 15 locations, over 100 menu items, school concessions, franchise locations and island-wide distribution.
- Mother's. Mother's is a Jamaican patty company with several fillings. A Jamaica Tourist Board newsletter also describes its coco bread and vegetarian crust options.
The Tourist Board also names Devon House and Sugar & Spice among established patty stops, and it counts independent bakeries and roadside sellers as part of the market.
Juici is the largest of the three by publicly stated Jamaican outlet count. The Jamaica Observer described Juici as having more than 60 retail stores in 2019, and a September 2024 Observer editorial called Tastee and Juici the two foremost patty manufacturers in Jamaica. Nationwide News described Tastee as the country's second-largest patty manufacturer in May 2026. The two companies report their numbers differently, so treat the ranking as a broad one.
Fillings to order
The standard Jamaican patty is a baked, folded pastry filled with seasoned meat, vegetables, seafood or cheese. Beef is the classic filling. Other common varieties include chicken, curried chicken, jerk chicken, vegetable, soy or plant-based, cheese or beef-and-cheese, shrimp, lobster, fish, callaloo, ackee and curry goat.
Beef is the classic filling, with chicken, vegetable and cheese among the other common choices.
Each chain highlights a different mix. Juici's company history records shrimp, chicken and vegetable patties. Tastee lists curried chicken, jerk chicken and vegetable. The Jamaica Information Service profile of Juici also mentions lobster, cheese, mega cheese and stewed chicken. Ask which fillings are ready that day before you order.
What a patty costs in JMD
Patty prices change by chain, filling, branch and date, so each price below carries its date.
These are single-patty prices from Tastee's May 2026 change.
Confirm before you go: Juici and Mother's prices vary by branch, so ask the counter for the current price of a single patty before you buy.
A July 2024 price guide put a general Jamaican beef patty between J$180 and J$350 (about US$1.13 to US$2.20). That range covers many sellers and dates from before Tastee's 2026 change, so use it only as background.
What to check at a branch
A few details decide whether a branch fits your day and your route. Start with the area and parish, because a shop in the middle of a town can be a very different stop from one on a highway. Then look at the rest of the list.
A good branch stop depends on the fillings, prices and hours on the day you go.
- The address or landmark. Use a recognizable location, such as the road or the junction, so the driver knows where to turn.
- Opening hours. Hours can change, so ask the branch for them before you set out.
- Fillings and prices. Prices vary by chain, filling, branch and date, so an old price list is not a guide to today.
- Travel packs. Tastee offers boxes of six or 12, and its frozen packs need a 24-hour preorder.
- Payment. Ask whether the branch takes cards, and carry cash as a backup.
- Vegetarian options. A Tourist Board newsletter mentions vegetarian crust options from Mother's, so ask about vegetarian and plant-based fillings if you need them.
Choosing a chain is mostly about which branch sits on your route.
Travel packs and where the chains are based
If you want patties to take home, Tastee's travel packs are one way to do it. Tastee sells boxes of six or 12 patties, either fresh-baked or baked and frozen. Frozen packs need a 24-hour preorder and are sold at locations including Norman Manley International Airport and Sangster International Airport.
Twelve standard beef patties at the May 2026 single price would come to J$3,840 (about US$24). A travel pack can be priced differently from single patties, so ask the Tastee location for the six-pack or 12-pack price before you plan the purchase.
Tastee's head office is at 25A Half Way Tree Road, Kingston 5. Its locations are spread across Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, St James and St Thomas, with more branches and concessions described by the company. Juici's head office and manufacturing site is at Lot 1, Clarendon Park, May Pen, Clarendon. If you live abroad, see Juici vs Golden Krust vs Tastee: Jamaican patty chains in America compared and Juici Patties in the US: every city it has opened in.
Ask each branch which payment methods it takes. Carry Jamaican cash for smaller shops, bakeries and roadside sellers.
Why the crust is yellow
The yellow comes from the dough. Jamaican patty dough commonly contains turmeric, curry powder, annatto or other yellow-orange colouring. Turmeric and curry add both colour and flavour. Some recipes and commercial products also use palm oil, paprika or yellow food colouring.
Turmeric, curry powder and annatto are the usual sources of the yellow crust.
The exact recipe varies by bakery and chain, so turmeric is not the only cause in every patty. A crust can be curry-seasoned even when the filling is simply beef. That is why the colour of a patty does not tell you what is inside it.
What to eat with a patty
A patty is usually a quick meal or snack, and the classic partner is coco bread. The hot patty goes inside the soft, slightly sweet bread to make a filling sandwich. The Jamaica Tourist Board describes this combination served with a local juice or soda. Where it is offered, whole-wheat coco bread is another choice.
The classic pairing is a hot patty tucked inside soft coco bread.
Other practical pairings include a boxed juice, a bottled drink for the road, or a second patty with a different filling. Tourism guidance recommends eating patties fresh and hot. The filling can be very hot, so give it a few minutes to cool before the first bite.
Patties also fit into more than one part of the day. Breakfast choices in Jamaica vary between homes, workdays, weekends and roadside stops, and patties sit alongside porridge, bread, bun and cheese, and tea or Jamaican coffee as common morning foods. At lunch a patty is a quick meal, and on a long drive it can serve as a travel snack. Plan your purchase around when you will eat it, since the Tourist Board recommends eating patties fresh and hot.

Common questions
Quick answers to the questions patty buyers ask first.
What are Jamaican patties called in Jamaica?
In Jamaica the item is usually just called a patty, and you order it by filling, such as beef, chicken, cheese or vegetable. "Jamaican patty" helps international readers tell it apart from other pastries. Small versions are often called cocktail patties.
What is Jamaica's largest patty manufacturer?
Juici Patties is the strongest answer, based on publicly stated Jamaican outlet numbers. Its history reports more than 60 stores and over 1,400 employees. Tastee, which Nationwide News called the country's second-largest patty manufacturer in May 2026, is the other major name.
How much does a box of Tastee patties cost?
Tastee sells travel packs of six or 12, and the frozen packs need a 24-hour preorder. Its single standard beef patty was J$320 (about US$2.01) from May 4, 2026. Ask the Tastee location for the current pack price, because a box can be priced differently from single patties.
Why are Jamaican patties yellow?
The dough is usually coloured with turmeric, curry powder or annatto, and that gives the crust its yellow shade. Some bakeries also use palm oil, paprika or yellow colouring, so the exact mix varies. The colour belongs to the crust, not to the filling.
What goes well with a Jamaican patty?
The Jamaica Tourist Board describes a patty served inside coco bread with a local juice or soda. Other practical pairings include a boxed juice, a bottled drink for travel, or a second patty with a different filling. Let a hot patty cool for a few minutes before you eat it.
