Saturday soup is a Jamaican custom, not one recipe. The name tells you the day, and the pot can hold beef, chicken foot, red peas, pumpkin, goat head or whatever soup the cook or vendor chose for that week. In Kingston, Soup King at Market Place on Constant Spring Road runs a rotating Saturday menu, and in Montego Bay, Pier 1 and Ena Jamaica both trade on Saturdays.

Think of a Saturday bowl as a meal, not a starter. Jamaican soups are substantial one-pot meals, often closer to a full meal than a light starter.

What Saturday soup means

Saturday soup is a Jamaican tradition rather than one fixed recipe. It commonly means a hearty, pumpkin-based beef soup with beef, yam, chocho, carrots and flour dumplings. Chicken foot soup, chicken soup, red peas soup and other versions may also fill the Saturday pot.

Yam, pumpkin, chayote and carrots on a wooden board beside green thyme Pumpkin, yam, chocho and carrot are the base of a typical Saturday bowl.

Saturday became the customary soup day through household routine. A large pot of meat, ground provisions and vegetables could cook while other Saturday chores were done, which is why the day is tied to wash day in many homes. Not every household keeps the custom, so treat it as a tradition rather than a rule. If you want the Sunday version of a big family meal, read our Jamaican Sunday dinner guide.

The Jamaica 55 culinary heritage project ties Saturday beef soup and pepperpot to an older stock-pot practice attributed to the Taíno, who gathered meat, fish and vegetables for soup. That is a heritage story, not proof that every modern pot shares one origin.

A typical Saturday bowl draws on these ingredients:

  • Beef, chicken or chicken feet
  • Pumpkin
  • Yam
  • Chocho, also called chayote
  • Carrot
  • Irish potato, coco, dasheen or sweet potato
  • Green banana or corn
  • Flour dumplings, including slender spinners
  • Scallion, thyme, pimento, garlic and Scotch bonnet pepper

Other soups you will meet

Several other soups are sold alongside Saturday soup, and menus often overlap:

  • Fish tea is a lighter, seasoned fish broth, often served as a starter or quick meal.
  • Mannish water is a goat soup made with goat head and other goat parts. It is tied to celebrations.
  • Pepperpot soup is vegetable-heavy, with callaloo, chocho, pumpkin, beans, okra, ground provisions and salted meat or pork. Ital versions may leave out the meat, and you can read more in our Ital food guide.
  • Red peas soup is kidney beans cooked with beef, pig's tail, chicken or other meat, plus provisions and dumplings.
  • Gungo peas soup is made with pigeon peas, often with pig's tail or other meat.
  • Chicken foot soup is a collagen-rich soup with pumpkin, vegetables and dumplings.
  • Cow foot, cow cod, seafood, conch, crayfish and corn soups are also sold across the island.

The name Saturday soup does not pin down one flavour. A cookshop or vendor may use it for beef soup, red peas soup, chicken foot soup, pumpkin soup or another substantial bowl on the day, so ask what is in the pot before you pay.

Sonia's Homestyle is another Kingston choice. Its menu includes chicken foot soup, and it is a restaurant rather than a roadside stall. Phone first to ask whether it has soup on the day you plan to go. Browse restaurants in Kingston for more places to eat in the city.

Crab Circle at National Heroes Circle has had soup vendors since the location reopened in November 2023. The soup vendors there serve soup, corn and crab, so this is a good place to compare bowls side by side.

Roadside stands in St Mary and St Andrew

Tamara Ivy has sold soup from a stand outside Castleton Botanical Gardens in St Mary. In January 2023, the Jamaica Observer reported that she and her mother sold crayfish, chicken foot, goat head and pig's tail soups there. Stands like this may change their hours, so call or go early on a Saturday.

In December 2024, Jeffrey Plunkett was serving cow cod soup and porridge at his roadside spot at the corner of Chisholm Avenue and Waltham Park Road in St Andrew. For the porridge side, see Jamaican porridge types and where to get a cup. Roadside vendors can offer the most local experience, but availability, payment methods and the soup on offer can all change. For more roadside options, see our Jamaican street food guide.

What a bowl costs

There is no island-wide price for soup. Prices change by seller, portion and parish, and a cup, a small bowl and a large meal can cost very different amounts. The clearest current Jamaican menu price is Sonia's Homestyle in Kingston, which shows chicken foot soup at J$350 (about US$2.20) as of October 2026. That is one menu's price, not a Kingston average.

The easiest way to avoid a surprise at Soup King, Pier 1, Miss T's Kitchen or a roadside stand is to ask for the price and the portion size before you order. Carry Jamaican dollars, because many small sellers are cash-first. Confirm before you go: the Saturday menu and prices change, so call the seller on the day you plan to eat.

Common questions

Why do Jamaicans eat soup on Saturday?

Saturday fits household routines, and one large pot of meat, provisions and vegetables makes a filling meal. Soup could simmer while other Saturday chores were done, which is why the day is tied to wash day. Not every household keeps the custom, but it remains a familiar weekly habit.

What is Jamaican Saturday soup?

It is a hearty Jamaican soup tradition served at homes, cookshops, restaurants and roadside stalls. Beef is the common version, but Saturday soup can also mean chicken foot, red peas, pumpkin, goat head, pepperpot or Ital soup. The name describes the day and the style, not one standard recipe.

What are the traditional ingredients?

A typical bowl has a seasoned broth, meat or another protein, pumpkin, ground provisions such as yam and potato, vegetables, and flour dumplings or spinners. Scallion, thyme, pimento, garlic and Scotch bonnet pepper add the seasoning. Red peas soup usually includes kidney beans and salted meat, while Ital versions use vegetables and plant ingredients.

Why is it called Saturday soup?

Saturday is the traditional day when many Jamaican households prepare or eat soup, so the name refers to that custom. It does not mean one mandatory ingredient list. Beef is often called the classic version, but chicken foot, red peas, pumpkin, goat head, pepperpot and Ital soups can all appear on a Saturday.

What type of soup do Jamaicans eat?

Jamaicans eat many kinds, including beef, chicken, chicken foot, red peas, gungo peas, pumpkin, fish tea, mannish water, pepperpot, goat head, cow foot, cow cod, seafood and Ital soups. No single soup is the Saturday soup. A vendor may offer one fixed special, several rotating bowls or whatever is ready that day.

How much is a cup of soup in Jamaica?

There is no reliable island-wide price. The clearest current Jamaican menu price is Sonia's Homestyle in Kingston, which shows chicken foot soup at J$350 (about US$2.20) as of October 2026. That menu does not say whether the price is for a cup, a small or a large portion, so check what the price covers before you order.

Where can I buy soup in Kingston on Saturday?

Soup King at Market Place on Constant Spring Road is the clearest option, with a Saturday menu that rotates each week. Sonia's Homestyle is another choice for chicken foot soup, though you should call for Saturday details. Roadside stands such as the Crab Circle vendors and Jeffrey Plunkett's stand in St Andrew also sell soup, but their hours can change.

Where can I get soup in Montego Bay?

Pier 1 Jamaica on Howard Cooke Boulevard is open Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and a 2025 guide names it for Saturday soup. Ena Jamaica at 5 Delisser Drive is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and describes rich Jamaican soups on its menu. Call either one for that day's soup and price.

What is mannish water?

Mannish water is a Jamaican goat soup made with goat parts, usually including the head, along with yam or green banana, dumplings, herbs, spices and hot pepper. It is tied to celebrations and communal occasions, including weddings and wakes. Soup King's rotating Saturday menu has included goat head soup, so check whether a seller calls it mannish water or goat head soup.

What is fish tea?

Fish tea is a light, seasoned Jamaican fish broth made with fish, vegetables, herbs and ground provisions. It is usually thinner than red peas or beef soup and is often served as a starter or quick meal. Check whether the bowl has pieces of fish, which provisions go in, and whether it is sold by the cup or the bowl.
